It does, or I say it did. We used to go fishing a lot in Cocodrie and I grew up on the Bayou, always using the Bayou. It doesn’t look the way it did when I was a kid, all the places we would go fishing kind of don’t exist anymore. It’s been a long time since we’ve gone to do any of that. I guess it doesn’t really affect me too much now that I live in Thibodaux. But, you know, for a while, I did worry about my parents living down there, before they built the levee, I worried about flooding and storms and stuff with them. I guess now it’s more of an indirect effect, it’s a loss of the nostalgia, but I guess I’m not as directly affected as what I used to be.
Me personally, in my college days, I volunteered a bit with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) and we would go out and plant mandrakes and stuff on the barrier islands to kind of help with that. So I did some volunteer work with that. I’ve been so disconnected over the past couple of years, I honestly don’t know what should be done at this point. We need a lot of intervention. There’s a lot of loss of culture. There’s a lot of loss of a lot of things, and it feels like we won’t have it before too long. And it breaks my heart, but whatcha gonna do?
