My dad and my grandfather were from St. Mary Parish and they would talk about the POWs in the fields.
There were German soldiers planting and cutting the cane — generally working the fields. There’s one anecdotal story about one of the German soldiers doing a parlor trick with a lit cigarette, flipping it back in his mouth and then flipping it back out for the entertainment of the kids.
The generation that would have witnessed it died off, and they took it with them.
